Semele, a priestess of Zeus, caught his eye whilst she was swimming in a river.  She had come fresh from the morning sacrifice, and wanted to get herself clean. Zeus, as everyone knows, had a roving eye and a “man’s needs”, and thus, once disguised, inveigled himself into her bed and got her pregnant.  Hera, Zeus’s wife, got to hear about this, and in disguise suggested to Semele that she ask her lover who he really was.  She did, and -to cut a long story short –  Zeus reluctantly appeared to her in the “sparsest thundercloud” and the “smallest lightning bolt”.  At which point poor Semele is…
